Giving salt the boot: How to fix footwear stains

Winter is a larrikin season, especially on a brand new pair of boots or shoes.

"Salty sidewalks can cause stubborn, unwanted ghastly stains, and the snow-water can leave shoes oddly shaped if not dried properly," said Donna Williams, client for women's seasonal boots at Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW), based in Columbus, Ohio.

Here are some tips for fixing and preventing stains from Williams:

• Take off salt stains: Mix two parts water and one part white vinegar. Use a paper towel to rub the solution onto a small segment of the affected area. Diluted vinegar is gentle enough to be used on leather but tough enough to remove stains.

Once the range appears clean, immediately use a soft, dry cloth to buff the area. This process should be repeated until the entire boot is scour, focusing on small sections of the stained area at a time. Allow the boot to air-dry for about 30 minutes.
